Betsy Shane was born and raised mere miles from New York City, the capital of cool. At a young age she was trained in piano and flute, before taking up guitar on her own. From there, she became a student conductor of her high school chorus, writing works for the chorus, orchestra and chamber groups, performed regularly at community concerts. She moved on to teach elementary school music, learning several new instruments in the process, before moving to North Carolina to study English and Ethnomusicology at Duke University.
While in school, Shane founded The Relatively Calm, a pop trio that released two records, as well as LAM! LAM!, an electronic pop performance art act. After graduation, Shane spent several years working at Durham-based ad firm McKinney as a proofreader and trafficker, learning the strategies of marketing and honing basic graphic design skills. In the fall of 2007, she founded locally beloved all-female group Pink Flag. Shane currently teaches music in Chapel Hill in addition to writing and performing on a regular basis.
