LAM! LAM! will be touring in support of her new digital release, Caliban, in May and June of 2014.
Caliban, the latest EP from Durham NC's LAM! LAM!, is an exploration of tropical and nautical themes and the trouble that surrounds idyllic seascapes. Caliban draws its name and inspiration from The Tempest, and the flashes of brilliance and eloquence that can make us empathize, if only for a moment, with a monster. As on 2012's Drei Vögelchen, LAM! LAM! softens her hard-lined electro and punk influences in favor of a quieter, introspective sound, featuring two guest appearances by Ayako Condo.
On the opener, "A Wreck of Birds," featuring Kondo, Caliban explores the optimism of starting over and setting out with another, which contrasts greatly to Kondo's other vocal contribution: the torch song lament of "Building A Broken Ship." "Reagan Day" recounts little-remembered 80s military action Operation Urgent Fury over a calypso march, and "The Waves" sees LAM! LAM! in more familiar electronica territory. Closer "Drowned" is a lo-fi romp in the vein of LAM! LAM!'s debut, a drum and vocals live performance which deteriorates musically as the narrator does. Caliban offers a wide angle view of LAM! LAM!, a good understanding of what she has done and a glimpse of what we can expect in the future. Caliban acts as a herald for LAM! LAM!'s sophomore LP, Wild, slated for release in August.
